Recent studies reveal new rock paintings and lithic tools in Canaima National Park, near Mount Roraima. For the indigenous Pemon and Kapon peoples, the tepui is the sacred dwelling place of the gods and the petrified trunk of the Cosmic Tree of Life. The mountain’s vertical geological formations are natural and scientifically confirmed.
Mount Roraima, a 1.8-billion-year-old tepui on the Venezuela-Brazil-Guyana tri-border region, is considered sacred by the Pemon and Kapon peoples. According to their mythology, the mountain is the stump of the Tree of Life, felled by Makunaima, giving rise to a great flood. Its summit shelters a unique ecosystem with endemic species, whose ancestry has been dated by science to 5.3 million years ago.
