White City of Honduras: Lost Civilization Revealed by LiDAR

In 2012, LiDAR technology mapped a remote region of the Mosquitia rainforest in Honduras, revealing an unknown civilization with terraces, plazas, an earthen pyramid, and stone sculptures dated between 1000 and 1400 CE. The 2015 expedition, led by archaeologist Christopher Fisher of Colorado State University, confirmed the findings on the ground, including a collection of intact ceremonial sculptures — among them ritual seats and vessels — that had never been disturbed. The site, associated with the legend of the White City (Ciudad Blanca), remains under study and protection by the Honduran government.
