About this portal

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, at the foot of the French Pyrenees, is one of the most visited pilgrimage centers in the world, with about four to five million visitors per year. In 1858, the young Bernadette Soubirous reported eighteen apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the Grotto of Massabielle, from which the spring emerged whose waters are associated with countless reports of healing. Since then, more than 200 million people have visited the sanctuary, many in search of consolation and renewal. The place is a focus of faith, compassion, and healing energy.

Pope Leo XIV Visits Lourdes on September 27, 2026

Pope Leo XIV will make a historic visit to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes on September 27, 2026, the first papal visit to the site in nearly two decades. The program includes prayer at the Grotto of Massabielle — where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to Saint Bernadette in 1858 — an open-air Mass on the Sanctuary meadow, and participation in the traditional Marian torchlight procession. The Sanctuary is mobilizing more than 600 volunteers and expects hundreds of thousands of pilgrims for this extraordinary event.

Sanctuary of Lourdes begins a three-year spiritual journey in 2026

In 2026, the Sanctuary of Lourdes launches the 'Path of Grace with Mary,' a six-stage meditative pilgrimage inspired by the Gospel of Saint Luke. The initial focus is the Annunciation, the mystery also revealed to Bernadette in 1858, inviting the faithful into a deep experience of faith and contemplation.
