Vassa 2026: Buddhist Rains Retreat Begins on July 30
On July 30, 2026, monks and nuns around the world begin Vassa — the three-month Rains Retreat, the oldest monastic tradition in Buddhism. At the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree, the entering of Vassa is marked by candle ceremonies, Dhamma talks, and offerings from lay devotees to the Sangha. During this sacred period, practitioners devote themselves to deep meditation, the study of the scriptures, and inner purification.
