About this portal

Ise Jingu is the holiest sanctuary of Shinto and is revered as the 'Soul of Japan.' Dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami and the grain deity Toyouke, it houses the Sacred Mirror, one of the three Imperial Regalia. Surrounded by an ancient forest of cypresses, the complex follows the tradition of Shikinen Sengu: every twenty years the principal buildings are entirely rebuilt, a living symbol of the cycle of death and rebirth. Walking through its woodlands is an experience of purity, silence, and reconnection with nature.

Okabiki 2026: Sacred Cypress Logs Begin Their Journey to Ise Jingu

The Okabiki ceremony, one of the oldest rituals in Shinto, begins on July 25, 2026 at Ise Jingu in Japan. Volunteers dressed in white manually pull sacred cypress logs (hinoki) over 65 km, from the Kiso forest to the shrine, in preparation for the temple’s cyclical reconstruction every 20 years — the Shikinen Sengu. The ritual symbolizes the eternal renewal of the deity Amaterasu and the living transmission of Japan’s ancestral traditions.
