About this portal

Lalibela, in the mountains of Ethiopia, is home to eleven medieval churches carved directly into volcanic rock, conceived by King Lalibela as a 'New Jerusalem.' Hewn from the top down out of single blocks of stone, they are one of the wonders of humanity's sacred engineering and remain a living center of faith for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. During festivals such as Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) and Timkat, crowds of pilgrims dressed in white fill the trenches and tunnels that connect the temples. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and radiates an unbroken ancestral devotion.

Ashendye 2026: Sacred Women’s Festival at the Churches of Lalibela

On August 23 and 24, 2026, the streets of Lalibela are transformed by the Ashendye Festival—an annual celebration of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church marking the end of the two-week Filseta fast in honor of the Virgin Mary.
