Resumption of the Pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in 2026 Following a Diplomatic Agreement

After several years of interruption, the pilgrimage to Mount Kailash was officially resumed in 2026, marked by the passage of the first 44 pilgrims through Nathu La in Tibet. The 2026 season is considered auspicious for coinciding with the Year of the Fire Horse in the Tibetan calendar, associated with a symbolic increase in spiritual merit. India’s Ministry of External Affairs coordinated the passage of 1,000 pilgrims in 20 groups, using the Lipulekh and Nathu La routes.

Year of the Fire Horse 2026: Pilgrimage to Kailash Brings 13 Lifetimes of Merit

The year 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse in the Tibetan calendar — an alignment that occurs only once every 60 years. According to Buddhist and Hindu tradition, completing the kora (52 km circumambulation) around Mount Kailash in this year is said to accumulate spiritual merit equivalent to 13 circumambulations in ordinary years. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world journey to Tibet to take part in this unique sacred window, regarded as the 'Mahakumbh of Kailash'.
