Study confirms human transport of Stonehenge’s bluestones over 700 km

Researchers at Curtin University analyzed more than 500 zircon crystals in river sediments near Salisbury Plain and ruled out the glacial hypothesis, indicating that Neolithic communities manually moved Stonehenge’s bluestones. The Altar Stone was traced to Scotland, 700 km away. This finding, published in January 2026 in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, points to a remarkable level of social and technological organization for the period.

Discovery in Bulford reveals a solar marker 500 years before Stonehenge

In Bulford, near Stonehenge, archaeologists from Wessex Archaeology uncovered a 5,000-year-old Neolithic structure with posts aligned to the summer and winter solstices. This finding, published in 2026, suggests that the practice of observing solar cycles predates the construction of the sarsens by half a millennium, pointing to a much older tradition connected to the sacred monument.

The blue stones that sing like bells

The bluestones of Stonehenge came from the Preseli Hills in Wales, nearly 250 km away. Research from the Royal College of Art showed that many are “sonorous stones” (lithophones): when struck, they sound like a bell or gong. There is even a village there called Maenclochog — “ringing stones.” That they sound is a measured fact; whether they were chosen for their sound is the most beautiful hypothesis.
