About this portal

Cappadocia is a world sculpted by the fire of volcanoes and hollowed by the hands of silence. Its 'fairy chimneys' — towers of volcanic tuff shaped by millennia of wind and water — rise like a natural cathedral over Central Anatolia. But the true mystery lies underfoot: underground cities such as Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı descend tens of metres through eight or more levels, with ventilation shafts, stables, chapels, refectories and huge circular stone doors that sealed from within. Carved over generations and able to shelter thousands, they were the refuge of early Christian communities who kept their faith there in prayer and darkness. To descend into Cappadocia is to enter the stone womb of the Earth — a place where humanity sought protection in the planet's depths and turned fear into sanctuary. Rock-hewn churches with Byzantine frescoes bloom in the cliffs of the Göreme Valley, weaving light onto the living stone.

Complexo Rupestre Sagrado na Montanha Meryem Ana, Capadócia

Em abril de 2026, foi revelado um complexo de 93 salas esculpidas na rocha na Montanha Meryem Ana, em Ürgüp, Capadócia. O pico de 1.603 metros serviu como santuário mitraico na época persa e posteriormente como igreja bizantina. Alinhamentos solares marcam o nascer do sol atrás do Monte Erciyes e o pôr do sol atrás do Monte Hasan. A tradição local celebra em 8 de setembro a festa da Natividade da Virgem Maria, integrando o local à Rota Cultural da Capadócia de 80 km.
