About this portal

Delphi was considered the 'Navel of the World' (Omphalos) in Ancient Greece, the center of the universe according to Greek mythology. The Oracle of Delphi, dedicated to Apollo, operated over a geological fissure that emitted gases which induced trance states in the Pythia. It is one of the most important sites of classical antiquity.

Research Reveals the Mysterious Origin of the Oracle of Delphi in the 9th Century BCE

A study published in July 2026 by researcher Caleb Howells brings together archaeological and historical evidence to clarify the origin of the Oracle of Delphi. Challenging myths that place the temple in the Mycenaean Age, the findings indicate that the cult of Apollo and the construction of the first temple at Delphi began in the late 9th century BCE. A layer of destruction by fire dated to 730–725 BCE corresponds to Pausanias’s account of the temple’s sack, and Cretan artifacts found at the site suggest that Cretan sailors took part in its restoration — not in the original foundation.
